The buoyancy of the UK's used car market continues to impress, with more than two million second hand cars sold over the last three months, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This, says the SMMT, means the used car market is "near recent record highs".

The makes and models of the cars sold will not surprise anyone - the top 10 is more or less a carbon copy of the new car market.

Ford's Fiesta and Focus dominate the top two spots, with the Vauxhall Corsa, VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra, BMW 3 Series, Mini, VW Polo, Renault Clio and Audi A3 completing the top 10.

British motorists, it seems, are keen to stick with what they know - economical, reliable cars.

But while the SMMT's figures are hardly Earth-shattering, they also revealed the most popular colours of used cars.

One might reasonably ask, however, if colour is a major factor when buying a used car - i.e. if you could get a good condition 2016 Audi A3 for £5,000 less than the going rate, would you care what colour it was?

10. Yellow - canaries, bananas and occasionally second hand cars...

9. Orange - the colour of, er, oranges, makes it into ninth spot.

8. Beige - not even shiny beige with sparkly bits - just plain old beige… boo.

7. Green - back in the halcyon days of 1996, green was the most popular used car colour.

6. Red - you thought this was going to be blue, didn't you?

5. White - keeps the sun off(?), shows up the mud - we’re not sure why it’s in the top 10.

4. Grey - oh dear, Britain, this isn't very exciting. We do hope three will be better.

3. Blue - OK - we had our money on lime green.

2. Silver - well, that must mean that number one is...

1. Black - This is the most popular used car colour (or the colour people want to sell the most).
