Van breakdown cover is a specialist roadside recovery insurance policy that ensures you and your passengers are able to complete your journey if your van happens to experience problems while travelling.
It is important to carefully read all the information available before making you choice of breakdown cover, to ensure you choose the correct policy for you.
Van breakdown policies offer different levels of cover
When deciding on breakdown cover for your van, you will need to choose whether you require:
- A local van recovery service
- Van breakdown recovery on a national basis within the UK, or;
- Van breakdown cover at home (Home Assist) and whilst out on the roads nationwide within the UK.
Why do I need van breakdown cover?
Having van breakdown cover isn’t a legal requirement in the UK. However, having suitable cover in place should your van breakdown provides you with the reassurance that someone will be on hand to help.
Having van breakdown insurance can also save you money – Avoiding the pitfalls of costly van recovery fees, should you not have a valid policy in place at the time your van breaks down.
What happens if I don’t have van breakdown cover?
If you don’t have a van recovery breakdown policy in place and you breakdown, not only could you face the costs associated with the van recovery, such as towing fees, but you may also have to arrange and pay for alternative transport to continue your journey.
How do I know I need van breakdown cover rather than car breakdown cover?
Look in your log book and find the section on vehicle category or vehicle type approval. If the letter and number listed is M1 it's a car. Most vans are listed as N1 or N2.
What is the cost of van breakdown cover?
The cost of van breakdown cover can vary depending on the level of cover you have in place.

What is included in my van recovery breakdown policy?
Our non commercial van roadside assistance and recovery policies include a great range of benefits* as standard such as:

Depending on the level of van breakdown cover you opt for you can also benefit from additional services. For example, roadside assistance for your van is included in all three cover levels, but other features such as van cover for breakdowns at the registered home address or within 1/4 mile of home are optional.

Is van recovery included in the breakdown cover?
All our van breakdown policies offer van recovery up to 10 miles. If you choose our 2 or 3 Star van breakdown cover, nationwide recovery is also included.
Am I covered if I breakdown in another vehicle?
If you also drive other vehicles for non commercial purposes, you may want to look at purchasing personal breakdown cover, rather than insuring the van specifically.
Our Start Rescue personal cover breakdown cover policies provide UK roadside assistance and recovery for the policyholder(s) in any vehicle** they are travelling in.
Alternatively, it is also possible to add multiple vehicles to your Start Rescue breakdown policy.
**Personal cover covers you when travelling in cars, motorcycles and vans of any age as a driver or passenger. All vehicle types must not exceed 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight.
Can I add van breakdown cover to my existing breakdown policy?
If you already have an existing Start Rescue policy, you will receive a 10% discount when you add an additional vehicle, including for example, adding van breakdown cover to your existing policy via our Customer Lounge.

What if you can't fix my van at the roadside?
To help minimise delays in recovery, if the symptom you report is deemed unlikely to be repaired at the roadside and requires a recovery, we will look to send out the correct resource straight away.
In instances where an attempt is made to repair your van, if, in the opinion of the Recovery Operator, they are unable to repair the vehicle within 60 minutes at the roadside, we will arrange for your van, you and your passengers to be recovered to the nearest suitable garage which is able to undertake the repair or a destination of your choice, within 10 miles from the scene of the breakdown.
Opt for our 2 or 3 star van breakdown cover options, and you will also be covered for nationwide van recovery.
With our 2 and 3 star van breakdown cover options, if in the opinion of the Recovery Operator, your van can not be fixed at the roadside or at a local garage on the same day, we will arrange for you and your passengers to be recovered to your home or if you would prefer and it is closer, your original destination.
Are there any vehicle weight and size limits that apply to van breakdown cover policies?
Our non-commercial van breakdown recovery policies cover vans of any age, but within these policies we cannot cover vehicles:
- In excess of 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) or;
- Vehicles used for business purposes such as hire or deliveries
For larger vehicles and/or hire vehicles you will require a business breakdown cover policy.
