Autumn driving/road trip advice

Autumn months bring with them particular problems that the UK motorist should be aware of. Whether you’re heading off on a long road trip, or simply wish to prepare for colder months, this post will help.

Dazzle from the low autumn sun can be a major problem. Try to keep your windscreen as clean as possible – both inside and out – to reduce any glare or dazzle. Abrasions and cracks can make the situation worse, so take good care of your glass.

Parts of your car that you should pay special attention to in colder months:

Windscreen wipers

After two years of constant use, windscreen wipers become less effective. Ensure they are replaced so you can clean your windscreen easily – especially important to prevent glare.

Windscreen washer fluid

Use a high quality fluid to help prevent freezing. Ensure you top up the correct reservoir.

Battery

Battery failure is a big cause of UK breakdowns year-round, but as temperatures drop, battery problems rise due to increased loads. If you start noticing any issues, it may be time to renew your battery. Better to do it now than midwinter, when battery failure and a breakdown can be even worse with the weather conditions to deal with.

Bulbs

As light levels decrease, you will rely on your lights even more during autumn. It’s a good idea to check your lights once a week – not forgetting brake and number plate lights. Consider carrying some spare bulbs, just in case.

Tyres

Inspect the general condition, pressure and tread depth of your tyres. 3mm depth is recommended in winter. If treads are getting worn, it’s a sign your tyres may need to be changed. Once again, better to do it in autumn rather than winter.

Antifreeze

Check your antifreeze levels and ensure they are in line with your handbook. Engine damage caused by low levels of antifreeze can be costly to repair, so take steps to prevent such damage occurring in the first place.
