A new survey by Gumtree Motors has revealed the top 10 cars Britons would like to drive before they die. 2,000 people were polled.

While the list is dominated by supercars, as one might expect, tenth position is actually taken by a supermini – namely the Mini Cooper.

The Ford Mustang – first made globally famous by the classic crime film Bullit – took ninth place.

The Lamborghini Aventador takes eighth place in the poll – the first supercar on the list.

The seventh-placed and comparatively suburban Audi TT is one of the most ponderous in the rankings, while the sixth spot is graced by the rather more likely Porsche 911 Carerra.

Hardly a supercar, but still considered to be one of the most beautiful vehicles ever built (at least as far as Enzo Ferrari was concerned) – is the Jaguar E-Type, taking fifth.

Another great British marque – famed for never “breaking down” but merely "failing to proceed", takes fourth – namely Rolls Royce with its luxurious, hardly-ever-in-need-of-repair, Phantom.

Any poll like this would be incomplete without the appearance of a Ferrari – and here it is, the classic 599 GTO, in third.

If speed is a key factor in getting on to this list, then the Bugatti Veyron taking second will not come as a surprise.

But in first place, combining speed, pedigree and startling good looks, is the Aston Martin DB9, the fourth British car on the list.
