Bicycle Insurance

The popularity of cycling across the UK has increased dramatically in the last two decades. 42% of people in England now have access to a bicycle, with a similar figure in Scotland (35%), Wales (63% among 25-44-year-olds) and Northern Ireland (36%).

From navigating the bustling streets of London to bumping down dirt tracks in Snowdonia, the bicycle has long occupied a special place in our work and leisure lives which is why we are delighted to offer you the ability to get a quick online quote.

Start Rescue has partnered with Sundays to provide an online service but do not offer any recommendations and/or advice.

If by using the Sundays quote tool below you find a suitable bicycle insurance product which meets your demands and needs and you decide to proceed with an application, you will be dealing directly with the product provider. Any contract will be between you and the chosen provider and not Start Rescue.

What are the pros and cons of travelling by bicycle?

Cycling is beloved for a variety of reasons: with no carbon emissions, it's environmentally friendly, and it's a great way to help stay fit.

Moreover, perhaps, it's essentially a free way to get around (notwithstanding purchase price and punctures) - and of course, it’s a lot of fun.

Cycling has received substantial support from the government, particularly through the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy. £1 billion of government funding has been made available to local bodies, covering safety, training and cycle route upgrades throughout the UK.

But while our roads are becoming more cycle-friendly, and running costs are almost zero, the initial purchase price of a bicycle can be high, which is why it is important to consider bicycle insurance.

A good bike might cost up to £1,000, while a very high-end bike could cost up to £10,000. For example, the latest Whyte S-150 C-Works retails for around £5,000, while a top-spec Mondraker Summum can cost up to £8,000.

Does bicycle insurance cover theft?

Needless to say, if a bicycle is stolen, it can leave a deep hole in a person’s finances. That's where bicycle insurance comes in. For a relatively low annual premium, the cost of replacing a stolen bicycle is covered.

A quality bicycle insurance policy could give bicycle owner's true peace of mind - no matter how valuable their bike is.

Do cyclists need bicycle insurance?

One of the advantages of bicycles is that they do not need insurance. However, that doesn’t mean it's not a good idea for people to purchase bicycle insurance in the UK. The UK bicycle market is vast, making bicycles very attractive to thieves. Indeed, more than 300,000 bicycles are stolen every year in the UK, according to ONS data.

What is cycle liability insurance?

Most regular bicycle insurance policies do not include cycle liability cover as standard - although our partners Sundays do as part of their Cyclist policy. Cycle liability insurance means a cyclist is covered should they accidentally damage someone's car or property - or if they accidentally injure someone.

How can I reduce my bicycle insurance premium?

There are a few simple things you can do to get a lower premium on your bicycle insurance.

Value your bicycle correctly: overestimating the value of your bicycle could increase your insurance premium, whilst underestimating could leave you out of pocket if you need to claim.

Home insurance policy: you may be able to add your bicycle to your home insurance policy, but this often means it is only covered while it is kept inside your home. I.e. if it is stolen from the street outside your workplace, it might not be covered.

Higher excess: When undertaking a bicycle insurance comparison choose a policy with a higher excess amount and your premium is likely to be less.

Is my bicycle covered if I lend it to my friend?

Many - if not all - policies only cover your bike while it is being ridden by you. So if you lend it to someone else and it is stolen, you wouldn't be covered.

Does bicycle insurance cover punctures?

In most cases, your bicycle insurer won't cover you for punctures.
