The sun may have largely disappeared from British skies, but not too far away in Spain, the heat is still on.

In fact, as many road trippers currently touring the south of Spain will tell you, it can get a little too hot at times, even as we approach the end of September.

But the Costa Brava on the northeast coast offers a good breeze to temper the heat – and a whole host of great attractions.

For those seeking the calm of nature, the Costa Brava is a great choice: the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and the Montseny Natural Park all offer stunning and tranquil settings if cities are not your thing.

Not far south of the Costa Brava is Barcelona, where the famous La Merce festival has just finished. But the Catalonian capital still has a great deal of culture to offer roadtrippers as we head towards October, as well as the popular Barceloneta beach and an exciting nightlife.

Driving in Spain can be a little more challenging than in the UK, largely because Spanish drivers can be very "assertive" when compared to UK motorists.

But on the plus side, the Catalan road and motorway networks are smooth and have plenty of capacity, so driving here is usually a pleasure –and is even more so thanks to the views of the glittering Mediterranean and the pleasant hinterlands.

And in your own car, you’ll be able to visit as many different beaches as you want, stopping whenever you wish.
