Car sales across the UK increased yet again during May – the 27th consecutive monthly improvement and a national record.

194,032 new cars were registered across the country – the highest figure since May 2004.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' chief executive, Mike Hawes, said: "The new car market has now grown in every month since March 2012 – the longest period of growth on record and a reflection of the UK’s ever-improving economic conditions."

The Top Ten Best Sellers

Once again the Ford Fiesta bags the top spot with 9,450 sales. This hugely popular car has been built since 1976 and is now in its sixth generation.

The Volkswagen Golf takes the second spot with 7,134 sales, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa with 6,536 units sold. The Golf has been built since 1974, while the Corsa traces its roots back to 1982.

Taking fourth spot is the Ford Focus with 5,824 sales, while fifth place is taken by the Vauxhall Astra, with 5,035 sales.

Sixth spot was taken by Nissan's Qashqai crossover (4,144 sales), seventh by the Audi A3 (3,886), eighth by the Volkswagen Polo (3,607), ninth by the Fiat 500 (2,896) and tenth by the Vauxhall Mokka (2,801).

The Astra and the Qashqai are the only two UK-built vehicles, manufactured in Ellesmere Port and Sunderland respectively.

Featuring in the top ten best sellers is a good indication of a quality car – and may suggests that you shouldn't need to call upon your breakdown insurance cover too often if you buy one.
