A startrescue.co.uk story...

Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Breakdown Cover

I would imagine all of us have been hit by the recession in one way or another. Personally, a couple of publishing companies went into administration, leaving me with invoices for articles I’d written that aren’t going to be paid. But it’s nice to know that for some people, the economic downturn has made no difference at all.

Take the customers of Aston Martin’s new car, the One-77. It’s a limited edition vehicle – only 77 are being made hence the name, each car is one of 77 – and it’s got an asking price of £1,440,000. Around 60 have already been sold and the rest are expected to shift early in the new year when test drives start. That’s right, 60 people have bought a car costing nearly £1.5million and they’ve not even driven it!

The One-77 is designed to be the ultimate expression of the Aston Martin brand, the culmination of 98 years of automotive design and engineering. The brief was to create something that epitomises everything the company stands for in terms of technology, performance and hand-crafted luxury. It’s based around the front-engined, rear- wheel drive principles of DTM Germany touring cars, translated into a road-going machine.

Power comes from a 7.3-litre V12 engine, developing 750bhp. There are no turbos here – this is the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated road-going engine – and it will hit 60mph from a standing start in 3.5 seconds. Top speed is 220mph.

Perhaps I should find out who these 60 customers are and send a begging letter asking if they would like to settle my outstanding invoices. They’re only a few hundred quid each; that’s the sort of money they will have down the back of the sofa.
