The cost of taxing your car will rise in 2019, following the Autumn Budget of 2018.

Some drivers will have to pay up to £65 more from April this year, with rises based on the retail price index (RPI).

All UK car owners could be impacted.

The little-publicised announcement read: “From 1 April 2019 VED rates for cars, vans and motorcycles will increase in line with RPI.”

The increases will go on top of present Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates. Vehicles that emit between 76g/km and 150g/km of CO2 will pay an additional £5.

Cars with emissions of 151-170 g/km will pay £15 more, while those emitting 171-190g/km will pay £25 extra.

Vehicles with especially polluting engines will be subject to even greater increases. Cars that produce 191-225g/km will be required to pay £40 more, while those emitting 226-255g/km will need to pay £55.

The maximum fee of £65 will be levied on vehicles that produce 255g/km of CO2.

Very large SUVs will be in this bracket, of which there are very few in the UK.

While the increases will not be welcomed by motorists, the hikes are modest compared to previous years.

Back in 2018 it was announced that cars that do not comply with Real World Driving Emissions 2 would be required to pay one tax band higher, equating to up to £500 for some drivers.

For example, if a vehicle produces 131-150 g/km CO2 but does not meet the Real World Driving Emissions 2 standard, the cost would be £500.

The former and new tax bands (after the extra diesel charge) are as follows:
