A startrescue.co.uk story...

Even though petrol prices are easing off, filling up remains one of the biggest costs associated with running a car. Here are two apps that could help you spend less on the stuff in the first instance, then use less of it once it's in your tank.

Drive Gain - FREE

Considering this app is free, the fact that it could save you up to £170 a year (according to the app’s makers) is even more astonishing. The app analyses how you drive with a view to saving petrol. Input your car's make, model and year-of-manufacture, then simply start driving. You're given a real-time mpg score – out of 100. The app then offers advice on how to modify your driving style so you use less. Available on iPhone only.

Petrol Prices Pro £2.99 per year

Available on both Android and iPhone, Petrol Prices Pro is perfect for those who like to shop around for the cheapest petrol. The app simply lists all the petrol stations around you and tells you what each one charges per litre. Even though the app does cost a few pounds, in the long run you make this back many times over – maybe even with one or two big fill ups. Users of this app will never feel that irritation of filling up only to later discover a cheaper station down the road!
