Buying your first car can be a daunting experience. Alongside cost and finance options, it's crucial to consider fuel economy, performance and reliability. And let's not forget the importance of choosing a car that looks great and reflects your personality.

Here are 10 of our favourite first cars.

Renault Twingo

This quirky number conjures memories of the old Fiat 500, with a bluff front and rear that make parking a cinch. Ideal as a city runabout, it has a small turning circle and plenty of interior space.

Toyota Aygo

Under its shell the Toyota Aygo is exactly the same as the Citroen C1 - but boasts an unorthodox body with striking X-shaped grille. The Aygo's 5-year/100,000 mile warranty beats the 3-year/60,000 mile guarantee of the C1, which makes up for the slightly higher price tag. Good fuel economy, but somewhat limited boot space.

MINI hatchback

Few super-minis do fun quite like the MINI. Preserving the cheeky essence of the much smaller 1960s original, the MINI offers a dizzying array of options. It's a fairly expensive choice compared to many on this list, but if you take your fun seriously, there really is nothing like it.

Peugeot 208

The 208 is available under Peugeot's innovative 'Just Add Fuel' deal, which means all basic costs - including finance, insurance cover, servicing, VED and breakdown - are met for three years in exchange for a deposit and a monthly fee. For a newbie driver, this takes a lot of hassle out of those early years.

Citroen C1

This diminutive city runabout offers low running costs and enough space for four people. It is also available under a similar scheme to Peugoet's 'Just Add Fuel' - making ownership simple and easy. Fancy a convertible version? The Airspace, with its roll-back roof comes pretty close.

Vauxhall Adam

Sure, the Adam is derived from the Corsa, and yes, it's not as pleasant to drive, but its unique looks are a real winner, giving the MINIs and Fiat 500s of this world a run for their money. It’s also offered with a variety of customisation options and buyers give its technology a big thumbs up.

Volkswagen Polo

Despite VW's emissions-rigging issues, the Polo is still regarded as a very economical car - particularly the petrol version. But what sets the Polo apart is the superb build quality both inside and out, excellent comfort and a spacious cabin. Of course, it's not the cheapest car on this list, but it's certainly one of the best.

Ford Fiesta

Given its 40 year pedigree, it's no wonder that the Ford Fiesta is still well-loved. The car has been continually improved over the decades, with the latest incarnation being truly knock-out. The updated model features MyKey, which restricts top speed and sound system volume - perfect for parents who don't want their progeny to cause any bother. Great fuel economy, superb handling and a spacious cabin make this a tempting choice for a first car.

Skoda Citigo

Under its shell the Citigo is identical to the Seat Mii and the VW Up! - but costs less to buy and has even better customer satisfaction ratings. Excellent fuel economy, attractive styling and a fun demeanour make this Czech built small car one to consider.

Hyundai i10

The i10 is a little dreary compared to some on this list, but in terms of practical considerations, it does very well. With a five-year warranty, good reliability and a claimed 65.7mpg, this is a sensible, if slightly un-fun choice.
