Fuel efficient cars are leaps and bounds ahead of what they were just a few years ago - and despite low petrol and diesel prices, they are still very much sought after by the driving public. Engines are now so efficient that any contender for the top 10 must return at least 85mpg.
As well as saving you money, keeping your fuel consumption low is better for the environment and could mean your car retains its value better when the time comes to sell.
It won’t come as a huge surprise that this top 10 is made up entirely of diesels. It should be noted however, that while diesels use less fuel, they can be costlier to repair – and a slightly less fuel efficient model could be a better bet if you don’t drive a great deal.
However, fuel economy is still a major factor to consider when buying a new car.
Fuel economy statistics are not quite as respected as they once were, thanks to a series of emissions data rigging scandals embroiling the likes of Volkswagen and Mitsubishi. However, a repeat of those events is unthinkable – for the industry and for authorities – so the fuel efficiency and emissions data provided now should be reliable.
That said, real-word fuel economy and CO2 figures can be higher than the official data provided by car makers. However, since cars are all tested on the same basis, they are all comparable – so the car with the most efficient official figures will be the most efficient in actual use.
